There were two weeks between David de Gea signing a new contract and his mentor Emilio Alvarez leaving Manchester United. Alvarez was retained by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the recommendation of De Gea last season, and a cynic might suggest he was used to keep the 'keeper.
De Gea had verbally agreed a new £375,000-a-week contract in late July and Alvarez viewed their working relationship as more of a partnership.
De Gea became plural in Alvarez's conversations and was referred to as 'we'. Alvarez was so settled in England he was dubbed 'The King of Hale' by restaurant staff in the familial village frequented by footballers, and seen holding court in the Crown Towers hotel's casino in Perth.
