However, despite the 48-year-old initially putting his weight gain down to eating too many of the sweet treats on offer in the white tent, there appears to be a much more heartbreaking reason behind it.
In 2009 Matt's ex husband Kevin McGee tragically died by suicide, just ten months after divorcing Matt in High Court. And speaking about his grief, the Little Britain star admitted that he began "eating lots" to help him cope with his loss. “I think people respond in all different ways to grief,” Matt told the Sunday Times in reflection in 2017. “I thought I was very conscientious going to a bereavement counsellor and not turning to drink, which I hardly ever do - I probably have six units a year. "I’m not going to start smoking again, I’m not going to do drugs.
But I ended up eating lots and having lots of sex.That was how I responded. As much as anything I was trying to distract myself." The comedian was later warned by doctors that same year that he was in danger of developing diabetes and was told he needed to reduce his daily calorie intake to 1,500.
