By Patrick Hipes Executive Managing Editor Germany is ramping up its response to the global coronavirus pandemic, with Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday announcing border shutdowns and the closures of most businesses including schools, bars, movie theaters and sports venues.
In a nationally televised news conference Monday night, Merkel also said all playgrounds, bars, clubs, cultural venues and zoos in the country will be closed.
Supermarkets, liquor stores, banks, post offices and pet stores will be among the few businesses allowed to stay open. Restaurants can only be open from 6 AM-6 PM and must observe proper distances between tables.
