Tam Courts has leapt to the defence of Dundee United’s Christmas party in Newcastle last weekend and denied the trip was to blame for club’s Covid outbreak.

The Tanndice boss insists there is no proof of a link between the two events – and added there were between 15 to 20 other clubs also in England’s north-east on festive nights out.

United’s game against Rangers on Saturday will go ahead but Courts will be without at least four first-team players for the trip to Ibrox.

Scottish football chiefs have held a crisis meeting with top-flight clubs in a bid to keep the season going until the winter break.The Joint Response Group hopes to tighten protocols as the game braces itself for an Omicron surge.
