CORRIE’S best-loved characters face being sidelined for a year because of coronavirus. Older cast members could be banned for their own safety if filming on the ITV soap resumes next month.
The plan is a precaution against the outbreak — and a second surge in Covid-19 infections this winter. That could see the likes of Ken Barlow — played by Bill Roache, 88 — and Rita Sullivan — played by Barbara Knox, 86 — all but written out of Coronation Street until spring 2021.
A TV insider said: “It’s a huge risk to remove some of Corrie’s biggest stars, but far riskier to allow them on set. “In one respect, it’s much simpler to focus on the storylines involving younger actors for whom returning to filming is less of a risk.
