Finance experts at Cashlady.com found that the British supermarket giant managed to beat discounted stores Aldi and Lidl, who came in at second and fourth respectively.

The consumer experts investigated the price of staple fry-up ingredients at nine leading supermarkets and then ranked them in terms of their value for money.

Items on the shopping list were enough to feed a family of four and included eggs, bacon, beans, bread, black pudding, hash browns, ketchup, brown sauce, tinned tomatoes and mushrooms.
