The actual number of people infected with coronavirus in the UK could be between 5,000 and 10,000, the government’s chief scientific adviser has said.
The government has now raised the risk rating from coronavirus in the UK to high. Nearly 30,000 people have now been tested in the UK and 590 people have been confirmed to have the virus - however, the actual total number of people infected could be much higher.
Speaking after an emergency government Cobra meeting in London this afternoon, Sir Patrick Vallance said that 20 coronavirus patients in the UK are currently in intensive care.
