North Ayrshire.A site on the Ardeer peninsula is one of three in Scotland and 15 in the UK in the running to host the plant.The bid is being supported by the University of Glasgow, North Ayrshire Council and NPL Group who own the land.It comes after the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) announced that plans to base the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) programme at locations across Scotland’s central belt had passed the initial stage of consideration.STEP, supported by £222 million in funding from the UK Government, aims to design and construct a prototype fusion energy plant capable of providing an environmentally-friendly source of electricity.The programme is targeting a concept design by 2024, with operations planned to.
