Italy will be placed under a national lockdown in its battle against coronavirus, prime minister Giuseppe Conte has said tonight.

The whole of the country will operate under the same rules that have been restricting movement in Northern Italy over the weekend.

Conte has urged citizens not to leave their homes, except to go to work and in emergencies, The Mirror reports. All public gatherings have been banned in the Mediterranean country and all sports events cancelled.

While public transport will remain operational, schools and universities across the country will close until April 3. The 60 million people in the country will be affected by the new measures tomorrow.
