Legendary actress Cicely Tyson passed away at the age of 96 on Thursday. A pioneer of women's rights and smashing stereotypes, Cicely Tyson was a trailblazer for black women in the entertainment industry in the West.

A statement from her manager Larry Thompson was released and published by the Associated Press. "I have managed Miss Tyson's career for over 40 years, and each year was a privilege and blessing," Thompson said in a statement to Variety.

While no cause of her demise was given, he added "Cicely thought of her new memoir as a Christmas tree decorated with all the ornaments of her personal and professional life.
