This is the moment a historic former railway bridge was lifted out of position to be scrapped. In a huge operation over the weekend, the steel-girder bridge was removed as part of the £5.9 million widening of Hyde Road.

The A57 was closed completely near Debdale Park in Gorton on Saturday as a huge 500 tonne capacity Liebherr crane was brought in.

In an operation that spanned several hours the bridge, which weighed 65 tonnes when lifted off its abutments, was firmly attached before being slowly and dramatically lifted out of the position it had stood for decades.

The bridge, which could support weight of around 36 tonnes, dates back to the former Hyde Road station, which used to stand next to it from when it opened in 1892 to its closure
