Douglas Ross will today set out his party's crime and justice manifesto ahead of May's election with a call to end the three-verdict system currently used in the most serious court cases.Unlike most of the world's legal systems, Scotland has three possible verdicts in criminal cases - guilty, not guilty and not proven.The legal implications of a not proven verdict are exactly the same as not guilty.
In both cases the accused is acquitted and is innocent in the eyes of the law.Ross said: "We've made it clear we are determined to scrap not proven and are calling on SNP justice secretary Humza Yousaf to back this vital measure."This verdict has no place in a modern justice system.
