A man and woman, aged in their 30s, locked themselves in the room along with their young child when the three burglars smashed their way into the rear of their home in Middleton at 9.45pm.
The intruders, who were armed with cable ties and an axe, then tried to force their way into the room from where the family had dialled 999.
The man suffered bruising to his hands as he held the door shut. The trio of burglars stole valuables and fled the scene in a blue 1 series BMW in which they had arrived.
