The Chancellor Rishi Sunak has tonight unveiled a scheme to help self-employed people affected by the coronavirus epidemic and claimed it was one of the most generous being offered anywhere in the world.

Those whose work or business has been affected by the economic shutdown that Covid-19 has caused would be eligible for a taxable grant worth 80% of their average monthly profits over the last three years, up to £2,500 a month he said.

Mr Sunak said it would cover 95% of self-employed people and freelancers and said it meant they were being treated exactly the same as furloughed employed people, with the government already having agreed to pay 80% of their wages.
