statement Thursday in response to the news that Nikole Hannah-Jones, creator of the Pulitzer Prize-winning “1619 Project,” was not given tenure at her alma matter, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The NABJ, which awarded Hannah-Jones its Journalist of the Year distinction in 2015, said it was “disappointed” by the revelation and was aware of reports that the denial of tenure was due to conservative opposition to her “1619 Project.” The project is an examination of the legacy of slavery in America and how it shaped nearly all aspects of society, from music and law to education and the arts, and including the principles of democracy itself.
