The much-anticipated WSL clash, held in front of 3,797 people at Leigh Sports Village, also saw 114,000 live online streams on BBC Sport.
A thrilling derby saw four goals and one red card as City's Georgia Stanway was sent off before Khadija Shaw put the visitors ahead.
Lucy Staniforth and Alessia Russo put United ahead with two goals in three minutes. However, substitute Ellen White had the last laugh to share the spoils in the derby.
