Business rates will not be collected in Manchester next month as the city council bids to support those affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

The town hall will not submit claims to banks for any direct debits due in April until the government applies its 100pc retail relief discount.

Special payment plans will be agreed with businesses so that rates due for 2020/21 are split over nine months from July to March next year.

Firms are still being urged to pay what they can and seek advice where possible from their bank or other means of support. But bailiffs will not be pursuing any overdue business rates - including from retail, hospitality and leisure sectors -  until the end of June.
