Little Richard dead: Music icon and rock ‘n’ roll pioneer dies aged 87

ROCK legend Little Richard has died aged 87. The singer - real name Richard Wayne Penniman - was famous for rock n' roll hits in the 1950s including Tutti Frutti and Good Golly Miss Molly.

His son Danny Penniman confirmed he had died but said his cause of death was unknown, Rolling Stone reports. The rock veteran is credited with changing the face of music after he shot to fame in the 1950s with record Tutti Frutti.

He went on to score a string of hits - including Long Tall Sally, Rip It Up and Lucille. The star - born in Georgia in 1932 - was famed for his outrageous dance moves and elaborate costumes.

He sang at a local church as a child but his dad didn't approve of his passion for music - causing Richard to leave home at 13.
