On the '80s-inspired anthem, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jade Thrilwall and Perrie Edwards celebrate their independence after ditching the deadbeat men in their lives. "So tonight I'll sing another/ Another break up song/ So turn it up, let it play/ On and on and on and on/ For all the times they screwed us over/ Let it play on and on and on/ Just another break up song," the foursome sing over danceable pop production on the track's pulsating chorus.
Co-written by Pinnock, Thirlwall and Edwards, "Break Up Song" is the veteran girl group's first release since 2019's "Bounce Back" and their recent holiday single "One I've Been Missing."
