James Tavernier pens Rangers contract as Ibrox skipper commits long term future to the club

James Tavernier has signed a new long term contract at Rangers the club have announced. It was reported earlier this week the captain, who finished last season as the Europa League's top scorer, was in talks over a lucrative extension.

Gio van Bronckhorst was keen to keep him at Ibrox and, despite Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent being out of contract in just 12 months, tying Tavernier down has been one of the top priorities this summer The skipper's existing deal was set to run until 2024 but the club have now confirmed he has penned an extension to keep him at Ibrox for the foreseeable future.

Should he see out his contract, Tavernier would go beyond his testimonial year, having joined from Wigan in 2015 and made 347 appearances so far for the Ibrox side.

He has also netted an impressive 85 times across all competition for the Govan club. The captain said: "I just want to spend more years here and have that security.
