Grandad died in police custody due to overdose of prescription drugs, cocaine and alcohol - and no cops were at fault, says watchdog

direct to your inboxA grandad died in police custody 'due to an overdose of a combination of prescription drugs, cocaine and alcohol', a watchdog has said.The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched an investigation into the death in 2019 of Joseph Coleman.

Mr Coleman, 57, from Cheadle, was arrested at a house in Cheadle at 4.45am on May 12, 2019, on suspicion of assault and taken into custody at Cheadle Heath police station.

The IOPC said in a statement he became ill a short time later and an ambulance was called.Father-of-five Mr Coleman, a painter and decorator known as Joey to pals, was taken to hospital but pronounced dead later, the police watchdog said.
