Geminid meteor shower to peak in Scotland tonight - how to see shooting stars

Shooting stars will light up the night sky this week as an incredible celestial display returns. The Geminid meteor shower is an annual event that takes place every December as the Earth passes through a cloud of cometary dust.

The display, which happens every year, is expected to peak some time during the night of Monday, December 13 and will be visible into the early morning of Tuesday, December 14.The night-sky spectacle is considered to be one of the most impressive of the year, with as many as 100 meteors streaming through the sky an hour.Meteors are pieces of debris that enter Earth’s atmosphere at speeds of up to 70km per second, vaporising and causing the streaks of light we call meteors.
