After Manchester City decided against offering former club captain Vincent Kompany a new contract at the end of last season, it was expected that the club would dive into the transfer market and replace the Belgian.
However, City boss Pep Guardiola did not decide to replace the 33-year-old, as he was happy with his other central defensive options in the shape of Aymeric Laporte, John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi.
But City's reluctance to take their tally of senior centre-backs to four was to come back to haunt them when Laporte, who joined the club from Spanish outfit Athletic Bilbao in January 2018, suffered a serious knee injury during City's emphatic 4-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Etihad Stadium at the end of August.
