Leave it to Garth Brooks to kick the volume way up on the Gershwin Prize.Not only did the country music superstar, the youngest songwriter ever to receive the Library of Congress’ Prize for Popular Song, open the show — a first for the event— but on a night when fellow artists came out to honor him, he flipped the script and paid tribute to his own songwriting heroes.The invitation-only Gershwin Prize taping, held last night (March 4) at Washington, D.C.’s Constitution Hall, packed plenty of star power.

Trisha Yearwood, Keith Urban, Ricky Skaggs, Chris Stapleton, Keb’ Mo’ and Lee Brice all took the stage to perform, and Jay Leno offered up observations on his longtime friend, noting, “He loves his fans as much as they love him.”Show opener.
