The Lionesses' victory at Wembley when they were crowned champions of UEFA Women's Euro 2022 was thought to be the first step in a massive change in equality, attitude and support for women’s football.
This is unfortunately not the case. The England’s women team earn a fraction of the amount of their male counterparts. The Lionesses' bonus for winning the Euro 2022 was £55,000 per player. This may seem like a large amount and cause for celebration, however it dwarves in comparison to the bonus paid to an England’s male football player. The men's team were paid £300,000 each for reaching the final of Euro 2020.
Winning the championship would have resulted in a payout of £460,000 each. Women’s Super League (WSL) is the highest league of women's football in England.
Since the Lionesses’ win, it is set to become even more high profile. However the Lionesses’ triumph hasn’t translated into a massive payout yet.
