UNIVERSITY Challenge legend Bamber Gascoigne has died today. The star, 87, passed away at his home in London after suffering a short illness.
Bamber, a well-loved TV presenter and author, was best known for his quiz master role when the series first aired between 1962 and 1987.
He was known for his firm but polite questions - and some of his most frequently used phrases have made it into popular speech. "Your starter for ten", "fingers on buzzers" and "I'll have to hurry you" were some of his favourite ways to put pressure on contestants.
Famously, his dedication to the programme was so strong he would fact-check all the questions – and even rewrite them if they read poorly.
