Town hall plans to take back control of 13,000 social homes across north Manchester

Thousands of social tenants across north Manchester could soon have the council as their landlord for the first time in 15 years - as the town hall moves to bring management body Northwards back in-house.

Around 13,000 homes currently managed by Northwards would in future be overseen directly by the council under proposals going before the executive tomorrow.

Manchester town hall had transferred management of the homes - which it still owns - to Northwards in 2005, in a set-up known as an ‘arms length management company’.

But a review of the organisation undertaken by the council’s housing chief says there is ‘cause for concern’ in relation to its finance and performance, particularly around customer service and repairs.
