Roy Christopher, Famed Production Designer Behind Tony Awards, Oscars and ‘Murphy Brown,’ Dies at 85

Jazz Tangcay Artisans EditorRoy Christopher, the multiple Emmy-winning production designer behind numerous awards shows as well as “Murphy Brown,” “Frasier,” and “Wings,” died on Feb.

2. He was 85.A rep confirmed to Variety that Christopher died in his sleep.After graduating from California State University Fresno in 1957, Christopher began his career as an art director, working on “The Name of the Game” in 1970.

That same year, he would work on “Jack Benny’s 20th Anniversary TV Special,” and in 1979, Christopher landed the job of art director at the Oscars, creating the concept design behind the 51st Annual Academy Awards.Christopher segued into production design in the late ’70s and worked on designing the sets for 1986’s 58th Annual.
