Charles, Prince of Wales (Charles Philip Arthur George; born 14 November 1948) is the heir apparent to the British throne as the eldest son of Elizabeth II. He has been Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay since 1952, and he is the oldest and longest-serving heir apparent in British history.
He is also the longest-serving Prince of Wales, having held that title since 1958. Charles was born at Buckingham Palace as the first grandchild of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. He was educated at Cheam and Gordonstoun schools, which his father, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, had attended as a child. Charles also spent a year at the Timbertop campus of Geelong Grammar School in Victoria, Australia.
Princess Diana was raised at the sprawling Althorp Estate which was also where she met Prince Charles after being introduced by her sister Sarah Spencer.
The late Princess of Wales, who died in 1997 aged 36, is now buried on a small island in the centre of The Oval Lake which is set in the grounds of the Grade I listed stately home in Northamptonshire.
However the childhood home of Princess Diana and its accompanying 13,500-acre estate will not be inherited by either of her sons, Prince William, 39, or Prince Harry, 37, but will instead go to their 27 year old cousin Louis Spencer, Viscount Althorp. This is because of male-preference primogeniture which means that the title and estate of an aristocrat will go to his eldest son.
