A pedestrian has died after being struck by a HGV tanker on the M56. Police were called a section of the motorway, between junction 14, for Helsby, and junction 12, for Runcorn, at around 5.30am on Monday morning (May 18).

The tanker was travelling in the direction of Runcorn when it struck the pedestrian. Emergency services pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.

No further details regarding the identity of the pedestrian have been released by Cheshire Police. The driver of the HGV was uninjured and they spoke with police officers at the scene.

A section of the M56 was closed eastbound this morning while investigation work took place. The motorway has since re-opened, but there are still reports of congestion in the area.
