Sam Mendes

Sir Samuel Alexander Mendes CBE (born 1 August 1965) is an English film and stage director, producer and screenwriter. In theatre, he is known for his dark re-inventions of the stage musicals Cabaret (1994), Oliver! (1994), Company (1995), and Gypsy (2003). He directed an original West End stage musical for the first time with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2013).

For directing the play The Ferryman, Mendes was awarded the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play in 2019.

Lesley Manville is among those being awarded in the British New Year Honours scheme, which this year will recognize 1,239 individuals for their "extraordinary contributions" to the U.K.

The actress — known for her frequent collaborations with Mike Leigh, an Oscar nominee in 2017 for Phantom Thread and due to play Princess Margaret in seasons five and six of The Crown — is being appointed as CBE (Commander of the British Empire), adding to the OBE (Order of the British Empire) she received in 2015.

Elsewhere, cinematographer Roger Deakins, already a CBE, is set to receive a knighthood. A regular behind the camera for the Coen Brothers, Denis Villeneuve and Sam Mendes, Deakins has amassed 15 Oscar nominations over his career, finally winning.
