Irish Derry Girls fans were left amused and rather unimpressed on Thursday when the hit comedy show, which follows the lives of Catholic schoolgirls navigating life in Northern Ireland in the 90s, was described as being ‘distinctively British.’ The UK’s former Media Minister John Whittingdale got himself in hot water after he told a Royal Television Society conference there was a need for broadcasters to produce more ‘British’ programmes such as Fleabag, Derry Girls and the Carry On films.
