Champions League defeat is hard to accept. City had been poor by their own high standards in the quarter final, but had just got themselves level against Lyon thanks to Kevin De Bruyne.

Then, a through-ball from the French side found Moussa Dembele — through an offside Karl Toko Ekambi — who raced clear and put Lyon back ahead.

Lyon would go on to compound City's misery by adding a third through Dembele, just a minute after Raheem Sterling missed an open goal from six yards.

But it was the second Lyon goal which Laporte was angry about, as he felt he was fouled by Dembele in the build up. If Laporte had not been tripped — accidentally or not — he would have been able to run with Dembele and try to hold him up.
