Universal Credit mum living without heating and cooker fighting for £20 lifeline

Universal Credit boost set to be scrapped next year. Deirdre Ni Chaislain was put on Universal Credit two years ago following a traumatic family break up as one of Northern Ireland's first claimants.

The mum-of-two, says benefits 'nearly broke her' after her fridge stopped working and her cooker was removed. The qualified teacher was forced to wait nine weeks for help and had to apply for a loan which plunged her deep into debt.

Households on Universal Credit currently get an extra £1,040 a year thanks to the temporary increase during the pandemic - but it's due to expire in April.

She told The Mirror : “After Universal Credit, I stopped leaving the house. My curtains were always closed. They nearly broke me.
