manchestereveningnews.co.ukdirect to your inboxManchester Council has approved a £2.3million plan to close streets to car traffic in the Northern Quarter.Temporary closures on Ducie Street and Thomas Street are to be made permanent and new footpaths built in a bid to encourage walking and cycling.It will mean one of the busiest pedestrian junctions in the city centre - where Piccadilly station approach meets Ducie Street - will now be free of cars.It is hoped the measures will improve safety at a spot where a lot of visitors who may be unfamiliar to the city first arrive.The junction has been closed to traffic for several months under a temporary order as part of measures to give people more space to social distance.But now council officers have agreed it can be made.
