If you were looking for the BAFTA Awards to provide some surprises this Oscar season, you will be sorely disappointed. As expected, “Oppenheimer” dominated the night taking Best Film, Director (Christopher Nolan), Lead Actor (Cillian Murphy), Supporting Actor (Robert Downey, Jr.), Original Score (Ludwig Göransson), Cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema), and Editing (Jennifer Lame).

Christopher Nolan has revealed that he wants to make a horror movie, but only if the idea is “really exceptional”.The Oppenheimer director was speaking at an in-conversation event at London’s British Film Institute (BFI) on Thursday (February 16), attended by a sold-out audience.When asked by one audience member if he would ever consider making a horror film, Nolan replied (via Variety): “Oppenheimer has elements of horror in it definitely, as I think is appropriate to the subject matter.“I think horror films are very interesting because they depend on very cinematic devices, it really is about a visceral response to things and so, at some point, I’d love to make a horror film. But I think a really good horror film requires a really exceptional idea.

What’s next for Christopher Nolan after “Oppenheimer“? Christopher Nolan has revealed the reason why his longtime collaborator Michael Caine didn’t appear in Oppenheimer.The Oscar-nominated film took the box office by storm last year, and saw Cillian Murphy take on the role of the titular theoretical physicist who helped develop the first nuclear bomb.The project marked Murphy’s sixth time working with the renowned director, and first time taking on the lead role following supporting slots in Batman Begins and Dunkirk.However, Oppenheimer did not feature an appearance from another one of the director’s longtime collaborators: Michael Caine.The London actor has featured in eight of his films including The Dark Knight, Inception, Dunkirk, The Prestige and Interstellar, and speaking at the British Film Institute chairman’s dinner, Nolan shed light on why he didn’t take on a role in the 2023 blockbuster.Accepting the BFI Fellowship, Nolan explained that he was willing to have Caine in the movie, but the actor jokingly turned it down, saying: “OK, enough is enough” (via Variety).Discussing his reaction to Caine sitting Oppenheimer out, Nolan said: “I had to go off on my own. Cillian Murphy has revealed that director Christopher Nolan typically sends one of his family members to deliver top-secret film scripts to him.Nolan and Murphy have worked together on six films – their most recent project being the Oscar-nominated Oppenheimer, in which the actor stars as the titular theoretical physicist who helped developed the first nuclear bomb.In a new interview with British GQ, Murphy said that Nolan usually makes sure the scripts for his unreleased films are delivered to him by hand.“It’s been his mum who’s delivered the script to me before. Christopher Nolan has responded to Robert Downey Jr.’s recent viral comments, revealing that he was slightly “afraid” of the actor when they first met.The actor – who has been nominated for an Oscar for his performance in Nolan’s latest movie, Oppenheimer – revealed that he had met with the director in the early ’00s in hopes to play the villain Scarecrow in Batman Begins.Downey shared that Nolan didn’t seem interested in casting the future Iron Man star, saying: “He was polite and all that. Cillian Murphy’s son is set to make his film acting debut this year.16-year old Aran has been acting from a young age. At 11, he starred as the titular character in Hamnet in a production that toured Dublin, London, New York, Boston, Brisbane and Hong Kong.In 2022, he also starred in the 2022 film Lola alongside Emma Appleton from The Witcher.

Robert Downey Jr. has claimed that the runaway success of Oppenheimer has become “a terrible tragedy” for its introverted director Christopher Nolan.Downey made the comments while presenting Nolan with the inaugural Trailblazer Award at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival in Utah, an honour which recognises the director’s contributions to independent filmmaking.“Confidentially, he needs his spirits lifted,” Downey joked.

Murphy was expected to take home Best Actor, but lost out to Paul Giamatti, who won Best Actor for his turn in The Holdovers in one of the biggest upsets of the evening.

Robert Downey Jr. is on his way to an Oscar nomination for “Oppenheimer,” and if you’re a betting person, well, I would already bank on the win, personally.

The American Society of Cinematographers revealed the nominees for the 2024 ASC Awards, a precursor to the Oscar for Cinematography, and the results were somewhat as expected. Emphasis on “somewhat.” In the Theatrical Feature Film category, Matthew Libatique (“Maestro”), Robbie Ryan (“Poor Things”), Hoyte van Hoytema (“Oppeneheimer”), and Rodrigo Prieto (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) all earned nominations.

The host, popular stand-up comedian Jo Koy who, to be frank, most of the nominees in the Beverly Hilton had never heard of, bombed spectacularly but as he noted, he’d only been hired 10 days before. Not ideal.

Barbenheimer’ phenomenon, but not enough to return it to pre-pandemic levels.A total of £1.06 billion was taken across the year, according to numbers released by Comscore (via Variety). That represents an 8.3 per cent increase on 2022’s total of £980.5 million.However, the number remains 23.5 per cent below 2019, the final year before COVID-19 shut down cinemas.

They aren’t always completely indicative of where The Academy is leaning, but, often, the BAFTA Awards longlists are better early indicators of potential Oscar nominations (and winners) than the BAFTA Awards nominations themselves. In that respect, the 2024 BAFTA Awards longlists are a very good sign for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” Each of those films had 15 mentions, followed by Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” with 14.

It’s been quite awhile since we’ve written about the Best Picture race. There’s a reason for that.
