Rod Stewart has revealed it hasn't always been plain sailing being married to Penny Lancaster. The crooner has been married to the model since 2007 but has been opening up about the time she walked out on him.

It was several years ago and the singer says he was left looking at a photo of his former love every night before they patched up their problems.

The Hoops daft star has sang about his ordeal on new album, Time, reports the Mirror.Rod, who turns 77 on Monday, explained: "I cover Tom Waits' Picture In A Frame. "Penny and I broke up for two weeks and the song is about that time.

I asked her for a photo of herself in a frame so that I could see her when I went to bed and when I woke up."Speaking to Australian magazine Life, the Sailing singer told of the valuable life lessons he has learned when it comes to marriage and long term love.He then added that he had "taken a lot of risks" when it came to romance - but that he realised over the years women like to hear the truth.Rod also claimed he believes women hate smoking and gambling."My relationship rule is, ‘Don’t argue after a glass of wine – leave debating until the morning,'" he explained."I have always loved women, won some, lost some, but it’s not about the magic touch, it’s about being a better person and a good listener."I met Penny in my 50s and if I had not learnt by that point in my life I was never going to."Rod and Penny, 50, first met in the late 1990s when she was a budding photographer and he was hiring for his next tour.
