William Basinski: Celebs Rumors

Last week, Pioneer Works — a hulking warehouse in industrial Red Hook turned concert venue, gallery, and co-working artist space — held an experimental music exhibition, hosting five sets from nine titans of the form. Headlined by Kali Malone and William Basinski, respectively, the two nights of sound presented radically different conceptions of the drone: the sustained tone that is one of music’s most ancient forms (along with the drum beat) but has been a consistent feature of its avant garde for the better part of a century.

Ellise Shafer Lana Del Rey, Pulp and SZA are among the headlining acts for next year’s Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona, Spain. Other bold-faced artists performing at the festival include Disclosure, FKA Twigs, Justice, Mitski, The National, Phoenix, PJ Harvey and Vampire Weekend. Also on the stacked lineup are Arca, Beth Gibbons, Bikini Kill, Charli XCX, Clipse, Deftones, Jai Paul, Kim Petras, Omar Apollo, Peggy Gou, Rels B, Troye Sivan, 070 Shake, Amyl and the Sniffers, Anothr, BadBadNotGood, Ethel Cain, Faye Webster, Freddie Gibbs and Madlib (in a special “Pinata” 10-year anniversary performance), L’Imperatrice, Milo J, Mochakk, Roisin Murphy, Romy, Stella Maris and Yo La Tengo.

If you’re a fan of ambient music, you’re probably already aware of William Basinski’s iconic album, “The Disintegration Loops,” and its historical significance. However, if you have yet to experience the music and its tragic context, perhaps the upcoming documentary, “Disintegration Loops,” will help shed some light on how one man was able to tap into the cultural zeitgeist during a tragic time in US history and release one of the most acclaimed albums of the past two decades.
