Chris Rock is said to have made another quip backstage just moments after Will Smith struck the comedian to the face. The Suicide Squad actor was awarded his first ever Oscar at last night’s ceremony, Sunday 27 March, but many have claimed the 53 year old’s glory was tarnished by his actions earlier on in the evening.

Chris was on stage hosting, when he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith and her shaved head. Will then proceeded to walk up to Chris and slap him across the face, before returning to his seat and shouting: “Get my wife’s name out your f***** mouth”.

Chris remained composed and assured the actor that he wouldn’t be mentioning Jada’s name again, before going on to host the next set of awards.

After leaving the stage, the 57 year old was said to have “a visibly red cheek”, as per a Vanity Fair article, with witnesses of the altercation saying: “The slap was so loud it sounded like a sound effect.” Another person said to journalist Anthony Breznican that Chris was still cracking jokes when he went backstage. “He tried to play it off to the gobsmacked crew and fellow presenters by making a joke about one of Will Smith’s other Oscar-nominated roles,” they said.
