Cage The Elephant singer Matt Shultz has spoken to NME about the three years he spent in psychosis and the arrest on gun charges that resulted and the new album ‘Neon Pill’ – which came out of the nightmare.Shultz was detained in a hotel in New York in January 2023 for carrying firearms which were only licensed in Kentucky and Tennessee. The arrest, a court found, was the result of psychotic delusions which Shultz had been suffering from as a side-effect of medication he’d been prescribed. After eight months of treatment, he now believes himself to be fully recovered.“It’s a lot better now than it was, for sure,” he told NME.

The instrumentation hit so hard, with an energy that was so commanding, that it was almost as if I couldn’t have kept myself from writing something to it if I had wanted to,” said the frontman of the new track.“[It’s] very different from anything we had ever written before, and somehow it still felt relatively familiar in contrast to our prior works,” he added.

Cage The Elephant frontman Matt Shultz has opened up about the “mental health crisis” he faced that led to his arrest in 2023.In January last year, Shultz was apprehended for illegal possession of two loaded guns the day after an employee at the Bowery Hotel in Lower Manhattan allegedly saw him carrying a handgun into the ground floor public toilets.The prosecutors claimed Shultz appeared to be intoxicated at the time and when the police arrived at his hotel room, they found two guns and a set of 11 Polaroid photos, some of which showed the firearm in question.He later pleaded guilty to three charges of attempted criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon and walked away with a no-jail plea deal.Now, Shultz has finally opened up about the incident via a post on Instagram. “It’s a miracle that I’m here today.

Cage The Elephant have returned with their first new song in five years, ‘Neon Pill’.The track is the band’s first new music since the release of their 2019 album ‘Social Cues’ and sees frontman Matt Shultz reminisce upon a failed romance – “It’s a hit and run, oh no/Double-crossed by a neon pill/Like a loaded gun, my love/Double crossed, crossed by a neon pill,” he sings in its chorus.The song has also seen them reunite with producer John Hill, who recorded it with them at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas.Check out ‘Neon Pill’ below:‘Neon Pill’ is also the first new Cage The Elephant song to be released since Shultz’ legal troubles last year.
