According to the numbers, 3.9 million viewers tuned in to watch Sunday’s festivities across 12 Paramount Global cable channels and the broadcast network The CW — which is a 3% increase from 2021’s programming, which attracted 3.7 million viewers.Paramount says viewers watched 1.59 billion minutes of VMAs content across TV, streaming and social platforms.

Jennifer Maas TV Business Writer MTV’s 2022 VMAs increased ts key demo rating by 1% compared to last year, when counting adults 18-49 who tuned in for the awards show across all 13 networks that it was simulcast on Sunday. The VMAs simulcast got a 2.81 rating in the advertiser-coveted demographic, compared to 2.78 the prior year. Like last year, these channels included MTV, VH1, the CW, Comedy Central, Nick At Night, Pop, TV Land, MTV2, Logo, Paramount Network, BET, BET Her and CMT. Sunday’s VMAs drew 3.9 million total viewers across those 13 networks. That’s up 3% from 2021’s comparable number of 3.7 million sets of eyeballs. (Both of those figures exclude out-of-home viewing, which won’t be reported by Nielsen until Tuesday.)

On the red carpet in the hours before the show, Jack Harlow arrived early, clad in a leather-ish dark grey suit (which would have been suffocatingly hot if the Tri-State area was in one of its crushing bouts of summer humidity; lucky for him it was a cool evening). Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic The 2022 MTV Video Music Awards were all about that bass Sunday night, and Flea didn’t have a lot to do with it. “VMAs, did you think I wasn’t gonna shake my ass tonight?” asked Anitta, very rhetorically, in the middle of her routine — and while most viewers were probably grateful for her concern for our concern, there was no need to fear she’d be the show’s outlier. Even the rock bands that were booked seemed to want to go into the show ass-forwards; hello, Måneskin cheek skin. (The cameras seemed to want to cut away from that singer’s pasty bottom; as you could almost hear the editors channeling Lisa Kudrow’s Aunt Sassy.) The only thing surprising in this regard, really, was the amount of robot ass in the show. Digital effects were sometimes used to bolster the supply of background dancers, or to provide giant setpieces, like the Attack of the 50-Foot Twerker that all but literally overshadowed J Balvin and Ryan Castro. When MTV is having to outsource butts to Silicon Valley, maybe it’s a sign we need to better allocate our natural supply.

The iconic band hit the stage at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday for the first time in over two decades to perform as they received the prestigious Global Icon Award, and used the opportunity to honor the late Foo Fighters rocker Taylor Hawkins.The legendary band was introduced by comedy icons Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, who explained the significance of the coveted honor, sharing, «The award recognizes artists who have left an enduring mark on the world and are just as impactful as ever.»The band kicked things off with a performance of their recent single «Black Summer,» before moving into their 2003 megahit «Can't Stop,» which got the crowd on their feet.The performance marked the band's first time playing the VMA stage since 2000, when they accepted the coveted Video Vanguard Award. Lead singer Anthony Kiedis spoke first while accepting the award, and shared his appreciation for his fellow bandmates.«Thank you to that sassy mistress known as MTV for supporting us for a thousand years and more… I really, really, really, I want to thank Flea and John [Frusciante] and Chad Smith,» he shared, «for giving me a purpose in my life for the last 40 years.
