Tribal loyalties in football can do strange things to our senses, which is probably how a Newcastle fanzine came to call Amnesty International's criticism of the Saudi Arabian regime a "publicity stunt" this week, with some fans wondering where Amnesty had been while they protested against Mike Ashley and why everybody was suddenly jealous of the potential riches coming to St James' Park.
It would be unfair to tar all Newcastle supporters with the same brush. There are plenty who are appalled at the prospect of their club being owned by a regime that has been criticised by Amnesty for its human rights record, citing long-standing issues including women's rights, the treatment of the LGBT community and the restriction of free speech.
