It had been the perfect possible start for City against the Magpies at a raucous St James' Park. A cross by Bernardo Silva in the opening five minutes found the Blues' new captain in acres of space and his close-range finish gave City the advantage.
Newcastle reacted well to going behind to the Blues and equalised in the 28th minute through Miguel Almiron. The Paraguayan bundled a cross home off his upper thigh and despite appeals for offside VAR awarded the goal. For Gundogan though there has been some good news on a personal level. According to Statman Dave, his goal for City was his 23rd in the Premier League in the last three seasons - that figure is more than any other City man over that time period.
