Joe Strummer and his post-The Clash band The Mescaleros has been announced.Set to be release by Dark Horse Records, ‘Joe Strummer 002: The Mescaleros Years’ will be released on September 16 and marks the first time a comprehensive anthology of the outfit’s work has been issued.The collection will feature remastered versions of the band’s three studio albums – ‘Rock Art And The X-Ray Style (1999), ‘Global A Go-Go’ (2001) and ‘Streetcore’ (2003), the latter released posthumously.As well as this, some of the first demos Strummer wrote for the group will appear in the box set’s 15 rare and unreleased tracks, remastered by Paul Hicks.Per Pitchfork, the collection also includes the song ‘Ocean Of Dreams’, which featured Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones.To mark the box set announcement, the label has put out the previously unreleased song ‘The Road To Rock ‘N’ Roll’. The Cure drummer Lol Tolhurst has spoken to NME about exploring the origins of goth for his new book, how his former band were part of the genre all along, and how the likes of David Bowie, Joy Division and Nine Inch Nails shaped the scene.In his far-reaching new book, Goth: A History, Tolhurst explores the music, literature and art that shaped the genre, as well as the band he co-founded with Robert Smith in 1977. “Despite our passionate insistence that The Cure was not a goth group,” Tolhurst writes in the book, “The Cure was very much a goth group.”Speaking to NME from his home in LA, the musician laughed off The Cure’s insistence not to be termed a goth band.

The Clash’s Paul Simonon has stated that he wouldn’t have reunited the band for £1million.The iconic punk bassist has explained that while the members were contemplating a reunion in the ‘90s – after parting ways in 1986 – there were numerous reasons why the prospect never materialised, including his feud with bandmate Mick Jones.“There was talk between me, Joe [Strummer], Mick and Mick’s manager, Gary Kurfirst, who was looking after Mick in B.A.D. But it didn’t happen for lots of reasons,” he explained to MOJO.

The Clash has helped expose a man who made £1.2million from fake vinyl records.Richard Hutter had been selling counterfeit records over a six-year period and was given a suspended jail sentence at Bournemouth crown court earlier this week.He was caught out after a Clash fan demanded his money back because of the poor sound quality on the record he had bought online.When the refund was refused the customer complained to trading standards officers, who then bought two sample records from Hutter’s website, Guns N’ Roses‘ ‘Appetite For Destruction’ and ‘Songs For The Deaf’ by Queens Of The Stone Age. Both turned out to be fake.Hutter’s home address was searched in July 2018 as a result, with officers seizing his phone and laptop, as well as a number of counterfeit records and sleeves, according to The Guardian.In addition to selling the vinyls on his website, it was discovered that he had also been selling them through a US website and eBay.On eBay, he had listed almost 1,200 LPs in the space of one year and he charged customers up to £35 for the counterfeit albums.When questioned, Hutter denied knowing they were counterfeit records and said he had sourced them from Europe and sold them on.

The Clash frontman Joe Strummer was a big fan of football, having used the game as a way to bring the band together during rehearsals.According to a press statement, “During rehearsals at Vanilla Studios in Pimlico for the recording of London Calling in 1979; he and the rest of the Clash played lots of 5-a-side and used football as a means of bringing the band closer together, getting them tight and making them play together as one. The Clash are set to release a special edition of their classic album ‘Combat Rock’, NME can exclusively announce.Released in May 1982 as the final album from The Clash line-up of of Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Topper Headon, ‘Combat Rock’ was the punk icon’s highest-selling and highest-charting album in both the UK and US – featuring the likes of ‘Should I Stay Or Should I Go’, ‘Rock The Casbah’, ‘Straight To Hell’ and ‘Know Your Rights’.Now, a special edition of the album will arrive next month. Entitled ‘Combat Rock / The People’s Hall’, the original record now comes with 12 additional tracks compiled by the surviving members of The Clash.Not only that, but the band’s collaborations with the late Ranking Roger will receive their first ever official release within a separate two-track EP.

Billy Bragg and Ukrainian punks Beton have spoken out after an online debate emerged when the band were accused of co-opting far-right imagery.Last week, Beton reworked The Clash’s iconic track ‘London Calling’ to create ‘Kyiv Calling’, a protest song against the ongoing Russian invasion. Their rendition was then shared by The Clash’s social media accounts, as well as by Bragg.Bragg then deleted his share and issued a statement, after images were brought to his attention of Breton members wearing Ramones-inspired t-shirts, with the word ‘Ramones’ at the top of the logo replaced with the word ‘Banderas’.

King Crimson founder Robert Fripp and his wife, singer Toyah Willcox, have shared a cover of The Clash‘s ‘Should I Stay Or Should I Go’ – watch it below.The cover is a part of the pair’s ‘Sunday Lunch’ video series which returned last week after a brief break for the holidays.Launched in 2020, the series has so far seen the couple share renditions of songs by Nirvana, David Bowie, Metallica, Billy Idol, The Rolling Stones, Judas Priest, The Prodigy, Guns N’ Roses, Alice Cooper and many more through Willcox’s YouTube channel.Last week’s cover saw the pair perform The Undertones‘ ‘Teenage Kicks’. Rostam has shared a deluxe edition of new album ‘Changephobia’, which includes covers of The Clash and Lucinda Williams.On the expanded version of the former Vampire Weekend member’s second solo album, he takes on versions of ‘Train In Vain’ and ‘Fruits Of My Labor’.‘Changephobia’ came out on June 4, and followed Rostam’s debut solo album, 2017’s ‘Half-Light’. The Clash frontman Joe Strummer: the Joe Strummer Campfire and the Joe Strummer Esquire, both available today (March 30).Fender’s new models were created “as a tribute to the diversity” of Strummer’s music, the manufacturer said in a press statement. Joe Strummer‘s ‘Assembly’.The posthumous compilation of Strummer’s career-best work, including The Clash rarities and re-mastered tracks, was released yesterday (March 26). With the compilation comes a new music video for ‘I Fought The Law’, The Clash’s 1979 cover of The Crickets’ 1961 original song.Animated visuals accompany a freshly unearthed live recording of the track performed by Strummer and his backing band The Mescaleros at London’s Brixton Academy on November 24, 2001.
