Judas and the Black Messiah, which was released in theaters and on HBO Max this past Friday does that. “One of the things we wanted to kinda showcase with this film was that the Black Panthers were motivated by a love of their people and that there was a lot of love,” Director and co-writer Shaka King Tells ESSENCE. “I think it’s important to frame the Black Panthers’ choices that they made.

That at the root of it was love, always.”That message comes across in the film, as does the romantic love shared between Chairman Fred Hampton and his fiancée Akua Njeri (né Deborah Johnson).
