Distin made more than 200 appearances for the Blues before moving on, and a later spell in his Premier League career saw him in the same Everton squad as Stones under Roberto Martinez.
Stones grew to relish his role at the heart of Martinez's bold Everton approach but was criticised for the mistakes he made and his game is still prone to errors; he was singled out for a costly mistake with England in the UEFA Nations League semi-finals last summer and recently slipped up in the Carabao Cup final against Aston Villa.
