Patrick Frater Asia Bureau ChiefSubscription video streaming services in Japan counted 48.4 million subscribers at the end of the first quarter, with Netflix and Amazon Prime Video accounting for nearly half of the market.The data is part of the latest research from research firm Media Partners Asia and is partially based on its sister company AMPD’s proprietary household measurement service.The strength and implied profitability of platforms in Japan is significant at a time when media and entertainment firms have endured a stock market rout, with investors changing focus from top line growth to costs and profitability.MPA’s “Japan Online Video Consumer Insights & Analytics” report for the end of the first quarter showed Amazon Prime accounting for 34% of total subscriptions, Netflix 14% and Hulu Japan 6%. They were followed by Abema TV, TVer and U-Next significant in the AVOD, freemium and SVOD categories, while Disney+ is steadily growing its reach in the market.

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief Japan’s online video market slowed in the fourth quarter of 2022, but ad-supported streamer TVer surged forward to overtake Prime Video as the most watched platform, according to a new report. The “Japan Online Video Consumer Insights & Analytics” report by consultancy Media Partners Asia shows SVOD subscriptions slowing to their slowest pace since 2015. From an average of 6-9 million per year between 2018 and 2021, they fell to just 3.1 million in 2022. Premium video viewership grew 8% quarter on quarter to reach 31 billion minutes in the fourth quarter, with SVOD at 55% share; AVOD at 34% and freemium at 11%.

Tomorrow Studios, an ITV Studios partnership, has optioned Japanese crime format Connected: The Homebound Detective, produced by Envision Entertainment and Japanese broadcaster Nippon TV, for an adaptation in the U.S. market. 

Rammstein’s Till Lindemann was questioned by Russian police before the cancellation of the frontman’s appearance at a music festival in Tver.The musician was booked to perform at the Maclarin For Homeland festival this weekend (August 29) but pulled out.Although it was previously claimed that Lindemann had been arrested, it is now reported that he was not detained, but questioned in his hotel room by police. The authorities wanted to speak to the star about the event, which allegedly would have violated the country’s COVID-19 policies.
