Animal Collective have recorded a new session for SiriusXM, during which they covered Silver Jews‘ 1994 ‘Starlite Walker’ cut ‘Trains Across The Sea’.For their rendition, the experimental band spliced it up with ‘Genie’s Open’, a track which has never been officially released but has been performed live by the band on tour from as early as 2018.In clips that have not been released online, the band also played recent songs ‘Prester John’ and ‘Passer-by’, as well as ‘Merriweather Post Pavilion’ track ‘Bluish’. Chilly Gonzales has released his new seasonal album ‘A very chilly christmas’, which features guest contributions from the likes of Jarvis Cocker and Feist.The trio united for a cover of ‘Snow Is Falling In Manhattan’, a cover of the 2019 song by Purple Mountains that arrived less than a month before singer and Silver Jews legend David Berman died.Feist also appears on the album’s one original track, ‘The Banister Bough’, while the former Pulp frontman joins Gonzales on their version of ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’.You can hear the new song below.The trio have crossed paths a few times before.

This past December, as my 28th birthday loomed, I did something slightly immature and dramatic: I posted contextless song lyrics on Twitter. The lines in question—“In 27 years/I've drunk 50,000 beers/And they just wash against me/Like the sea into a pier”—came from the Silver Jews’ “Trains Across the Sea,” off 1994’s Starlite Walker. Like many fans of Silver Jews leader David Berman, I’d found myself continuously returning to his work in the wake of his sudden death last August, not long after he re-emerged as Purple Mountains.
