killer who stabbed a random stranger to death with scissors has been transferred to a low security unit – just 12 months after he was detained at the state hospital without limit of time.George McAdam stabbed Paul Smith, 28, as he talked to his mum on the phone during his lunch break, near Edinburgh Castle in May 2019.McAdam was first charged with murder but was formally acquitted of the offence because he was not “criminally responsible” due to a mental health disorder.The 40-year-old was then ordered to Carstairs, which houses some of Scotland’s most dangerous criminals.Now insiders have said McAdam, originally from Washington, Tyne and Wear, has been moved to a unit in Newcastle – and is no longer in a high security ward.A source
