Belfast institution. Located on Athol Street, nestled between the Europa Hotel and Grand Opera House, the chippy opened when John Long decided to convert part of his grocery shop.
At the time, Athol Street was a busy part of the city - an area populated by linen mills and its workers. And in the years since, Long’s has only had two other owners.
Walter Titrington took over in the 1970s and saw the move a few yards along the road to its current location. During The Troubles, Long’s wasn’t immune to the violence sweeping the city.
The windows were blown in a couple of times, resulting in Walter installing the mesh covers that remain to this day. In 1996, the chippy was bought by its current owner, John Copeland.
